Demarcation Bay, the end of the Alaskan coast and the start of the Canadian part of the trip, the part before entering the passage where anticipation builds … for three weeks … three long weeks !!!
Demarcation Bay is actually 9 km as the bird flies from the actual border, where both countries subsidies a spectacular 1,200mm high obelisk to mark the northern most point of their border. Yes, you read correctly, slightly above a meter, we had to walk so close to see it that it was pathetic. A great hike nonetheless, the most exercise I've had in four months really.
What do you do when you are on a boat for three weeks, stuck at anchor on a ship? Well you do a few things:
you get used to taking a dip in 4 degrees Celsius water;
you watch a lot of stuff: four season's of Grey's Anatomy, three seasons of Hannibal, seven seasons of Game of Thrones, three seasons of the Walking Dead, all the Harry Potter movies, all the Marvel movies … you get the pictures;
you do lots of bonfires;
you meet a team of aviary research scientists trying to save the common eider duck;
you fish with locals;
you find whale bones and start carving;
you get bored;
you look at the ocean;
you squabble, fight, bitch, moan, argue, pest, complain, annoy and more;
you get IMPATIENT.
