Imagine a group of twenty-two adults, all enriched by their own with their personal experience, their travels and the communities they have encountered along the way. It would be unthinkable that such a diverse, culturally enlightened group would find themselves in a situation where … where basically where everybody acts like selfish opinionated morons with their own agendas. Me included – I don;t actually believe that, it's just to make me sound humble and all.
Small tensions build up and that is a fact of community life, especially in the confined living space of a yacht. It is understandable that they even get to the point where it calls for a group discussion, to make sure we are all on the same page; after all, this is an expedition and everyone needs to be aware and in line with its goals.
But when it reaches a stage where fights, actual screaming matches, erupt at the smallest spark because egos aren't set aside – or even for valid reasons – and two valued crew members end up giving up, well then we leave the realm of adulthood for the uncharted lands of stupidity. And sailors don't do well with uncharted lands.
People don't talk about the nasty side of our trip because it isn't glamorous, but things got dirty, stressful, miserable and downright depressing on some occasion. None of that makes the whole experience any less than it is, the best moments of my life.
But I never thought we would have to stoop this low before because a tight group once more.
Well at least we had a great time in town and they had hot showers. Photos by Andy Jamieson.
Yours in disbelief,
